The Exercise and Entrance Into the Spirit—Ch.18

The Exercise and Entrance Into the Spirit

Heb. 10:22—Let us come forward to the Holy of Holies with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience and having our bodies washed with pure water

I.    Review of the Human Soul and Spirit

  1. Man’s three parts, body, soul, and spirit, parallel the three parts of the temple: outer court, Holy Place, and Holy of Holies—1 Thes. 5:23; 1 Cor. 6:19.
  2. God was in the Holy of Holies; today, God is in our spirit—2 Tim. 2:22.
  3. We need to press on, in our experience, from living in the flesh or the soul, to living in the spirit.

II.   The Experience of the Altar

  1. In the type of the tabernacle the cross is typified by the altar in the outer court. It is there that we repented and received the Lord Jesus.
  2. Every stage in our experience of the Lord is something in our spirit.

III.   The Experience of the First Veil

  1. When we give up the world and learn to fellowship with Christ and take Him in the Word as our daily food, we have passed the first veil into the Holy Place.
  2. In the Holy Place we have Christ as the light within (lamp), our food (the showbread), and fellowship (incense altar).

IV.   The Experience of the Second Veil

  1. All the experiences beyond the second veil are hidden: manna, rod, the law.
  2. We can enjoy the open things but not live in the spirit. There is a difference between exercising the spirit and living by the spirit.
  3. When we realize that our self must be broken, and apply the cross to our being, we become a person in the spirit.

V.   The Experience of the Red Sea and the Jordan River

  1. In the Red Sea the world was buried; in the Jordan the twelve tribes, represented by the twelve stones, were buried.
  2. We must pass through the two veils just as Israel passed through two waters.
