Vision for Advancing Truth Pursuit

I. See the goal:  We need to realize that truth constitution is God’s desire for us

Truth Pursuit is to fulfill our Savior God’s desire—the constituting of every saint with the divine truths which is necessary for the church’s testimony

  • 1 Tim. 2:3b-4 “Our Savior God desires ALL men…to come to the full knowledge of the truth.”
  • This is so that the church can fulfill its God-ordained function to be the “pillar and base of the truth” (3:15).

II. Embrace the process: We need to commit to a diligent, continual exercise (consistent, according to our capacity and circumstances)

  • 2 Tim. 2:15 “Be diligent to present yourself approved to God, an unashamed workman, cutting straight the word of the truth.”  “Diligence is the most important characteristic of a servant of the Lord…Diligence is crucial because it builds up our spiritual reserve and thus enriches us. Spiritual wealth comes from diligence”—Character, ch. 2, p 19
  • 1 Tim. 4:6-7 “Being nourished with the words of the faith.” The metaphor of feeding with, reading and inwardly digesting and the present participle [“being nourished”] suggests a continual process. [Linguistic Key to the Greek NT, Rienecker/Rogers]
  • v. 7 …Exercise yourself unto godliness. We need to give ourselves to a deliberate, regular exercise.

III. Pursue with companions:  Pursuing is better with a community, so get some companions

  • 2 Tim. 2:22 –“Pursue…with those.”
  • 2 Tim. 2:2 – The truth pursuing community should be enlarging; our practice of Truth Pursuit should be “contagious” so as to spread to others who can “teach others also.” Find some with whom you can fellowship the truth and commit these things.
  • Acts 17:11 – “Now these people were more noble than those in Thessalonica, for they received the word with all eagerness, examining the Scriptures daily to see whether these things were so.”

IV. Practice habitually: We need to take regular steps to receive, digest, assimilate, and spread the word of the truth, both personally and with our companions

  • Pray, Pray-read – Eph. 6:17-18; 1 Tim. 4:6 – Receive the nourishment
  • Read, Study – Isa. 34:16 – “Seek from the book of Jehovah and read”; Acts 17:11 – Gain the understanding [open your Bible]

V. Speak, recite – Eph. 4:25 – “Speak truth each one with his neighbor” – Speak for digestion, assimilation, and retention.
